She'd been temporally displaced before. Having lived multiple lives before this one, the transition from present to past usually didn't bother her as much as it did others. But this wasn't a past that Dax had experienced by way of having lived it. No, she only glimpsed it — once, when Jadzia fell back in time alongside Benjamin. It hadn't been what she would call a pleasant experience, and recalling it now did her little good. It only served to remind her of the danger she'd been in and how she had to pretend her spots were elaborate tattoos to avoid being discovered as something other than human.

Would she have to do that here? Somehow, she doubted that. If this world was so accustomed to visitors from other worlds and times, having an alien in their midst was likely the least of their worries. Especially if the influx in population meant that they were offering the visitors housing and providing them with the means of sustaining themselves while trapped in this era.

Hopefully it was something that innocent, something that was completely out of their control that they were doing their best to adapt to. Her past experiences and training as both a psychologist and a Starfleet officer, however, told her not to rule out malicious intent just yet. Something was afoot here and it could very well be the opposite of what she was hoping...

Either way, she'd find out once she got to the end of this green line.

[ she clears her throat, sitting down on the bed within her dormitory. turns out, there was nothing sinister waiting for her at the end of that green line. just a room with a bed, much like the dorms she lived in at the academy. ]

This is Lieutenant Ezri Dax. If there are any Starfleet Officers present within the city, please respond.

[Gambit smiles in greeting, though there's clearly a question playing through his mind.]

Bonjour, chere...or should I say Lieutenant? Th' name's Remy leBeau. Did you, uh, say Starfleet?

Lieutenant is preferable, and yes. I did. Have you heard of Starfleet before?

[You could say that, Dax. You could definitely say that. He's not going to say something weird, though. Instead, he just nods.]

Here an' dere, oui, Lieutenant. Remy suits me jus' fine.

[ probably for the best. ]

Mind if I ask where that accent's from, Remy?

[He shakes his head.]

Not at all. You ever heard of New Orleans?

Of course! [ ah, that's why it sounds familiar. ] It's a Terran city. I've been there a few times.

[ in this life and the ones that came before. benjamin sisko remains a constant in dax's lives. ]

Eh? [He smiles like she answered well.] What'd ya think of her?

I think it's one of the loveliest cities Earth has to offer.

[ but she is very biased as sisko's multi-lifetimes bff. ]

[He smiles at her description, nodding.]

She ain' all pretty, chere, but she's home, non? Even when I'm away.

The parts I've seen are. Ever city has it's problems, it's dark sides. But that doesn't mean the brighter parts can't shine.

[he smiles again.]

So, what kinda places you like ta see, Lieutenant? Any place special ta you?

Airy was tasked with meeting those who arrived on the platform. The task had been give to her by her own stubborn volition. There were many who didn't want her greeting the arrivals but Charles thought it was a good idea since she was the most suited to deal with any oddities that arrive.

When Ezri arrived she's greeted with a smile and the phone and Airy's usual speech, she's gotten quite good at it. If aliens are something unusual then Airy didn't show it.

"I think I covered everything. Is there anything else I can do to help? I know this is weird but we are looking for a way to send you guys back... I mean home not just back." She paused. "You know how to use a phone right?" She only asked because it has already come up.

Technically, she's never held a phone before in here life! Dax might have been around during the era that they were still used on Earth, but her first host existed in the years prior to First Contact and they didn't have such devices on Trill at the time. Their technology revolution took a much different path than Earth's did, but a phone is simplistic enough that someone with a technical mind like Ezri's ought to be able to figure it out. It looks easy enough.

"Yeah, I think I got it," she says. "Though I want to ask if you and your... whoever your people are — are you looking into this problem yourselves? Some of us who are stuck in this mess might be able to lend a hand with that."

Ezri was a scientist in a previous life and the parts of her that were still Jadzia were itching to solve this mystery.

Airy chewed on her bottom lip. "Well, no one has offered to help us figure it out. I suppose you could if you think you can." That was horribly redundant but it was simply how her mind worked. "It has a lot to do with energy flow and..." Airy squinted while trying to remember what she'd been told.

She's been having trouble thinking lately.

"We are looking into it ourselves though. This facility is underground, which I'm sure you noticed, anyway... everything inside of it and the people who live here are secret. As far as the government knows I ran away from home and have been missing for almost two years. A lot of people here are assumed dead or missing. We only have ourselves to look at this, you know?" She paused again trying to think clearly. "What sort of stuff do you do?"

Airy was a little awkward but earnest. She was trying her best.

Ezri sensed that. Whatever was going on here, it didn't appear to be this woman's doing. (Though she knew better than to completely rule out the possibility that she was or that she did actually have an inkling of what was going on here.)

"Well, I was a scientist in my previous life." Literal previous life, Airy. "And my second host was an engineer."

Airy sort of knew what was happening but for her it was a feeling. She couldn't describe it and if she tried the words would be vague and disjointed. The best she had was repeating what she knew was true.

"There are some scientists here. You should talk to Charles... less engineers because there isn't a lot of technology that works well around magic." Which was protecting HQ and subsequently everywhere. "We got these phones to work though." She was a little proud of that.

"Magic."

If she sounded doubtful, that's because she was. Magic was a concept she battled with across many of her lives, having most recently encountered it in more of a mystical form than the fabled wizardry that was written into some of the more fantastical holosuite programs. Dax didn't believe in magic; everything that was dismissed as magical could easily be explained as a facet of technological gains beyond one's current perceptions or a biological gift localized to a certain species.

And yet... She couldn't fully explain some of the things that Benjamin had experienced. Some of the things revolving around the Prophets that she's witnessed. Sure, she could easily reason that those wormhole aliens possessed technological advancements that were well out of the Federation's reach, but something about that didn't sit right... And where would you even begin to place a being like Q?

She pursed her lips, nodding. "Alright. Sounds like it's going to be tough. Good thing I happen to like a challenge."

Airy flashed her a smile. "I was skeptical to. Well, before..." She waved a hand and a few sparks of light and bubbles appeared in the air before them. "That." Among other things.

"If you need anything let me know. I probably won't be able to help but I might know someone who can." She liked being helpful.

"I will, and I'll probably take you up on that. I'm sure you have connections."

Whether those connections were helpful or not was yet to be seen. For all she knew, she was agreeing to something that was going to get her into more of a mess than she's already it. But it simply wasn't in her nature to sit around, especially without a homing beacon to hover near while waiting for proper rescue.

Airy nodded her head enthusiastically. She was to humble to admit her actually position in HQ.

"Yeah. Um... er, I'll let you take a look around. You can always call my phone if you have questions too." She held up a matching phone to her own.

What are you Lieutenant of?

[This feels like an important question to ask.]

Also I haven't heard of Starfleet or anything like that.

I'm a Lieutenant in Starfleet. It's a peacekeeping armada for the United Federation of Planets.

[ very important, though a question she would be unable to answer if the nature of this place hadn't already violated the temporal prime directive for her. ]

Okay but what is it that you do as Lieutenant?

[Hanna really has no idea.]

Like I get the whole Starfleet thing, clearly from space whatever but what do you do there? Like are you a solider? [That's what she usually thinks of.]

No, I'm a psychologist first and only a soldier when necessary. I'm the Chief Counselor aboard a space station, but my duties aren't limited strictly to therapy sessions.

[ she's a dax, thus she's capable of doing a multitude of tasks that are not within the usual counselor's job description. ]

Therapy?

[She knows one therapist and that hadn't gone very well.]

So you enjoy listening to people complain?

First rule of counseling: never call it complaining. The station I serve on is many lightyears away from most of its inhabitants' homeworlds. We are presently at war and the people aboard the station, both permanent residents and those from ships only docked temporarily at our ports, have been through some unimaginably trying times. They need someone to listen, to give advice; a safe place to talk about the things that have happened to them or they're going through — to talk about the comrades they've lost, to mend and heal.

Opening up and getting something off your chest... that's not complaining. Not in the least.

Good thing I'm not a counselor.

[Hanna smiles as if this is a good thing. She's caring and loyal but also honest to a very blunt degree.]

Considering we're probably lightyears or timezomes away from our homes are you going to start counseling here? [Not that she's interested. Nope, not going to talk about her problems.]

I might, though my other talents might be more useful elsewhere.

[ but people still might need someone to talk to... perhaps she could do both? ]

What other talents?

[Hanna is a high school student. Her biggest talent is shopping which she does very well.]

Temporal Theory and some not-too-shabby engineering skills.

I don't know what that means.

[She knows what engineering skills do.]

Temporal Mechanics. Time travel and alternate dimensions.

Alternate dimensions sounds like what we need here.

[Just saying.]

And yet, in all likelihood, that's exactly what's going on here. At least in part. Time is certainly a factor, considering I, myself, hail from the 24th Century.

Yeah I'm from early 2000's not here though. I don't even think anyone I know exists here which makes no sense.

[She's googled from the computers at the city library. There isn't any internet access in HQ and that bugs her.]

Nobody I know from back home exists on this plane, either.

[ which isn't very comforting to hear (or share), but it's a fact she can't deny. for the first time since ezri was joined with dax, she's without a familiar face. ]

There is one person from my home here. He showed up around the same time I did.

[Hanna has that but it also means that it's possible. Maybe some of Ezri's friends will show up here.]

Oh, well. That's good. I mean, it's not good that you're both stuck in this situation; but at the same time, it can be a comfort to have a familiar face around.

Yeah. I'm happy he's here.

[ a pause. her intent is to be selfless, but— ]

That probably came out sounding horrible. It's not that I wouldn't appreciate the company, it's that I wouldn't wish being trapped her on anyone. Stuck like this, it isn't a situation anyone deserves to be in, much less wants to.

I guess but what if they could take you home? I'm sure your friends are looking for you.

Starfleet? Like the Enterprise?

I was there, once. [In a story Xavin never tells, but remembers well. Despite most everyone else having somehow forgotten it. How do you forget beaming into the future and onto a Starship, and dealing with an alien wanna-be-god?]

I'm Xavin, and as far as I can tell, this is 21st Century Earth, and I haven't seen anyone in Starfleet uniforms around.

Yes, like the Enterprise. Though I hope you don't mind if I ask how you're from the 21st Century and are familiar with Starfleet?

I was in a group who were flung across time and experienced an adventure with the crew of the Enterprise, with the crew of Captain Picard. We eventually got home again, but it was a pretty crazy time.
